Documenting the Now

Helping archives ethically and collaboratively document the public's social media coverage of events as they unfold.

The Challenge

The use of social media by the public to chronicle historically significant events -from #BlackLivesMatter to #MeToo – is widespread. Scholars, students and archivists, amongst others, now need a user-friendly means of collecting and preserving it, in an ethical way.

Our Approach

A tool and a community developed around supporting the ethical collection, use, and preservation of social media content.

Thus far…

  • Conducting workshops to support a growing national network, providing training for specific social justice communities

  • A college-level curriculum in development

  • Investigating sustainable funding models

  • Archivists Supporting Activists launched by Documenting the Now in the wake of the murder of George Floyd to help coordinate memory work in activist groups who are demanding racial justice.
