Historypin

A digital platform and engagement methodology to support shared community memory, locally and globally

The Challenge

Local communities are increasingly divided and cultural participation can reflect this. Local and national organizations find it hard to bring together different groups in an engaging way.

Our Approach

A community-centered digital archive that supports the sharing of local stories and photos, together with methods to engage local communities.

Stats & Impact

  • 4000+ cultural organizations using it around the world

  • 100,000+ storytellers, archivists and citizen historians contributing

  • 350,000+ stories pinned to around 32,000+ projects in over 2,500+ cities

  • Over $9m raised to support community memory projects over the last 11 years (see select community memory case studies here)

  • Ongoing research to support community-based archives

Case Study: Fujinomiya Project, Japan

Through photos, efforts to create a place where trans-generational exchange, including senior citizens with dementia, can engage in exchanges. In the winter of 2014, high school students from Shizuoka prefectural Fugaku-kan, set up an interactive event involving local senior citizens, using old photos from Fujinomiya. This interactive event was held in the Fujinomiya Station Shopping Street. http://www.glocom.ac.jp/2014/04/post_200.html
